{"id":4850,"date":"2019-02-17T16:20:17","date_gmt":"2019-02-17T15:20:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/came-italy.com\/?p=4850"},"modified":"2024-05-26T19:53:56","modified_gmt":"2024-05-26T17:53:56","slug":"the-benefits-of-synchronous-brushless-dc-motors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/came-italy.com\/en\/the-benefits-of-synchronous-brushless-dc-motors\/","title":{"rendered":"The benefits of synchronous brushless DC motors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In this article, we will show the main benefits of synchronous brushless DC motors, also known as <a href=\"https:\/\/came-italy.com\/en\/our-brushless-direct-current-bldc-services-are-presented-in-our-new-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BLDC (BrushLess Direct Current)<\/a> motors, powered by inverters and having permanent magnet rotors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">BLDC motors are composed of three main elements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the stator, which consists of a pack of stamped T-shaped laminations or sectors (assembled to form the stator); coils are wound on the teeth of these laminations to form the windings, which are connected to each other and to the electronic board<\/li>\n<li>the rotor, which consists of a cylindrical support with permanent magnets glued to it, or a pack of stamped laminations with \u2018pockets\u2019 in them to hold the permanent magnets<\/li>\n<li>the electronic board that functions as a controller to ensure that the motor works correctly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since the &#8217;80s, the development of semiconductors has paved the way for the introduction of these motors. A considerable reduction in electronic component sizes in recent years <a href=\"https:\/\/came-italy.com\/en\/ecodesign-and-energy-saving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has led to an increase in their growth, and they now replace brushed DC motors in some applications<\/a>, thanks to some significant benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>replacing the brushes and commutator with a PM rotor and electronic board offers greater and better dynamic performance (meaning the range of available speed and torque, and fine adjustment)<\/li>\n<li>no maintenance problems due to brush wear<\/li>\n<li>no sparks in the sliding contacts, which are dangerous in potentially explosive atmospheres<\/li>\n<li>less noise, both acoustic and electromagnetic<\/li>\n<li>increased efficiency (because there is no friction and power dissipated in the contacts between the brushes and commutator)<\/li>\n<li>increased power\/weight ratio<\/li>\n<li>smaller overall motor size for the same performance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They are also widely applied in very high-efficiency AC motors, <a href=\"https:\/\/came-italy.com\/en\/windings-asynchronous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">where the traditional asynchronous motor<\/a> is unable to achieve the required low-consumption performance.<\/p>\n<p>Given these benefits, it is also worth mentioning at least two significant drawbacks that partly limit the success of these motors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the cost of permanent magnets, especially for high-quality magnets such as neodymium<\/li>\n<li>the cost of the electronics, especially if the quantities do not justify large-scale economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That said, these motors have undergone an explosive growth in recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/came-italy.com\/en\/came-extends-towards-new-application-sectors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to the point that they are used in various sectors, and companies are showing an increasing interest in this world<\/a>.
